Key topics discussed during the meeting included prospects for expanding inter-university cooperation, BSU's entry into the ‘Human Well-being in the Digital Environment of Smart Cities’ consortium, and collaboration opportunities in pedagogy, social sciences, and humanities. The meeting, organised by HSE's internationalisation departments, aimed to identify potential areas of partnership and strengthen existing collaboration.
AI on Guard of Ecology: Students from Russia and Belarus Propose New Solutions to Environmental Problems
An international online hackathon dedicated to solving environmental problems was held at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod. Students employed artificial intelligence and computer vision to develop innovative solutions for image segmentation, predictive modelling (forecasting future events based on data from the past) of emissions and creating chatbots for nature reserves and national parks.

In autumn 2024, Yea Rem Choi, from South Korea, Junior Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-scale Analysis and assistant at the HSE MIEM School of Applied Mathematics, defended his doctoral dissertation on applied mathematics at HSE University. HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov Joins Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights
The corresponding decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. HSE will focus on providing expert support to the council in improving the effectiveness of the science and education system, developing civil society institutions, and protecting citizens' rights.
HSE Presents Claw Engine at Major Gaming Industry Expo
From November 29 to December 1, 2024, members and participants of the ‘Game Engineering and Interactive Systems’ workshop at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM), took part in the largest gaming event of the year—RedExpo. Together with the student indie studio Bear Head Studio, they showcased their proprietary development, the Claw Engine, a generative AI-powered tool for game creation. This year, the workshop continues to refine the product and is already working on its first game using the engine.
‘One of My Goals Is to Encourage the Exchange between Russian and Mexican Philosophies’
Jorge Luis Méndez-Martínez, Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Logic, Linguistics and Formal Philosophy, was named the winner of a competition of the National Council for Sciences, Technology and Humanities of Mexico. He was selected from hundreds of applicants for the position of Researcher for Mexico and will be working on a project on the philosophy of sound and auditory perception and the history of science in Mexico, Russia, and the Soviet Union. On November 22, 2024, the International Laboratory of Financial Economics (LFE, ICEF HSE) hosted the 13th International Moscow Finance Conference, bringing together researchers and experts from various countries to discuss current issues in financial economics. In his welcoming speech, Vladimir Sokolov, Head of the Laboratory, emphasised the significance of financial market research for the global economy.
Taming the Element: How AI Is Integrating into the Educational Process Around the World
Artificial intelligence is gradually becoming an indispensable part of higher education. Both students and teachers use it to reduce the volume of routine tasks and expand their capabilities. The limitations and prospects of AI are discussed in the report ‘The Beginning of the End or a New Era? The Effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in Higher Education,’ published in the journal Modern Education Analytics, under the scientific supervision of HSE Academic Supervisor Yaroslav Kuzminov.
Winners of the Yandex and HSE Olympiad Develop an AI Model to Assess Vehicle Condition
Yandex Education and the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have concluded the first joint Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis Olympiad (AIDAO). The winning team, AI Capybara from ITMO University, developed an AI model that detects defects in vehicle exteriors and interiors. The challenge for the competition was devised by the Yandex Taxi machine learning team, who will evaluate the feasibility of implementing the AI model in practice.
