open seminars of the Faculty of Computer Science were held in April and May in eight cities across Russia and Belarus.
The seminars were led by teachers in the ‘Mathematical Methods of Optimization and Stochastics’ and ‘Data Science’ Master’s programmes.
The seminars were aimed at upper-class undergraduate students, Master’s students, postgraduate students and teachers from various HSE campuses and other universities. The topics were selected in order to demonstrate the most outstanding achievements in the fields of modern mathematics and computer science and included ‘Methods of multi-modal clustering for data mining’, ‘Architecture and platforms of data analysis distribution systems’, ‘High dimensional statistics data’ and ‘The complexity of computation, efficient algorithms and convex optimization’.
The seminar was attended by approximately 300 people. Students also had the opportunity to learn more about HSE’s Master's programmes in mathematics, computer science and software engineering.
The events were held on HSE campuses, branches of the Yandex School of Data Analysis, and other venues in Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Minsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Perm and St. Petersburg.

International Experts in the Faculty of Computer Science
An important step in integrating the university into the global educational, scientific and research space is the expansion of international recruiting. Since its very first year, the Faculty of Computer Science at the Higher School of Economics has had a foreign professor working on staff. In 2015, four internationally recruited experts teach and conduct research in the faculty.
How Programmers Help Unravel the Secrets of Physics
The Summer School on Machine Learning in High Energy Physics, which was co-organised by the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Russian internet company Yandex, has ended. Below, the Head of HSE's Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis, Andrey Ustyuzhanin, talks about the various ways in which physicists and programmers cooperate. He also discusses how researchers from HSE and Yandex have been participating in CERN experiments and how ordinary smartphone users can help unravel the secrets of the universe.

Computer Science Colloquium Now Available on Youtube
The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, where international specialists teach alongside Russian professors and one Master’s programme on systems and programming engineering is taught entirely in English, has launched a public colloquium. The colloquium — a faculty-wide seminar — is a platform for teachers, research fellows, graduates and undergraduates and anyone interested in computer science to discuss and exchange opinions and information. The only rule for the colloquium is that whoever wants to talk about their new research results or issues related to computing must use language that everyone can understand.
