HSE University in Perm: The Upcoming Anniversary
On September 12, 1997, HSE University in Perm was established by decree of the Government of the Russian Federation. A year later, the university enrolled its first students.
A lot has changed in 25 years: HSE University in Perm has grown and expanded, but the values that the university supports—respect for each other, mutual assistance and continuous development—have remained unchanged. Our university is a team of faculty and staff, doctoral students and undergraduate students committed to maintaining high academic standards in their activities.
Today, the community at the Perm campus includes more than 9,000 graduates, almost 2,500 students, and 400 faculty and staff. The university implements 12 bachelor's and master's degree programmes, more than 25 professional retraining and advanced training programmes, international laboratories carrying out fundamental and applied research, and conferences that bring together world experts.
HSE University in Perm is the only university in the Perm Region to rank among the top 30 Russian universities by quality of state-funded admission. We strive to give students relevant knowledge, teach them to apply it in practice, and support their initiatives in academic and extracurricular activities. HSE University in Perm trains professionals not only in economics, but also in computer science, humanities, software engineering, linguistics and design.

When you think that 25 years have passed since the government decree to establish HSE University in Perm was issued, it takes your breath away. For a university, 25 years is a child's age, but for a human life, 25 years is a long period. It turns out that I spent half of my life at HSE and together with HSE!
Back in 1995, at HSE University in Moscow, Galina Volodina and I dreamed of establishing HSE in Perm. We met on a training programme. We liked the economics teacher training programme we studied on—we were inspired by the teachers, great and superior, the authors of textbooks and the founders of HSE University: they were with us and taught us.
We wanted to be part of the youngest and most progressive university in Russia, and we wanted to gather the best teachers and students from all over the region and other regions. We wanted to continue to live and work not outside this university, but inside it, to become part of it. We wanted to learn new things, communicate with experts, and be part of this pulsating, modern and ambitious organism.
And in September 1997, it happened! We opened HSE University in Perm. It was something incredible—like a dream—clear, but really global, hardly achievable. But it happened. May our Perm campus develop and prosper. May talented, aspiring, and involved people always work here. And may talented new students come to us with joy and aspiration. It's worth it.

I joined HSE University as a student. I wanted to earn some money, but I ended up staying here for a long time. There were very few of us at HSE University 25 years ago, but we sincerely believed in what we were doing—that our small team was capable of creating a new innovative university in the Perm Region. We stayed up all night, came up with a lot of projects, and talked to different people. This was not just the growth of the university, it was also our personal growth.
Apparently, others felt our faith and the fire in our eyes. For example, I am still surprised at how much the parents of high school students in those years trusted us, because the HSE building was very old, the classrooms were unequipped, and there was practically nothing but a strong and enthusiastic team.
HSE University never stands still. There is an endless cycle of new events, so there is no boring or routine work here. In my opinion, the only way to do your job well is to love it.
25 years is an age of strength, energy and big plans. I congratulate all my colleagues and wish prosperity to HSE University in Perm!
