HSE Wraps Up Its First April Conference to Be Held Online
As it entered its third decade of existence this year, HSE University’s annual April Conference experienced a first: it was held in an online distributed format. HSE News Service spoke with organizers and participants about the event.
Experts Discuss Media, Art, Fashion, and Education at Telling Stories Festival 2020
What does the post-COVID future have in store for museums, universities, and the media? Does big data protect us or pose a threat? What are the prospects for fashion shows, cinema, and theaters? How are different generations experiencing the pandemic? These and other issues were discussed at the annual festival of communications, design, and media.
Telling Stories Festival to Be Held Online for the First Time
On May 15-16, 2020, Telling Stories, a communications, media, and design festival that is dedicated to ideas, innovations, and modern technology in the creative industry, will be held online. The HSE Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design is the festival organizer, and the speakers include film directors Paul W.S. Anderson and Vadim Perelman.
‘It’s about the “Moral Stability” of the Economy’
HSE experts participated in the first international online forum, ‘The World, Post-Coronavirus: A View from the Heart of Eurasia’, which was held on April 28 in Ufa on the initiative of the Bashkortostan government. Scholars, businessmen, and politicians from different countries discussed threats, opportunities, and solutions for the economy and the social sphere.
‘Higher Education Will Not Return to Its Old Format’
An online discussion on the topic of ‘New Higher Education: After the Period of Compulsory Remote Operation’ was held on April 27 as part of the Moscow International Education Fair MIEF-2020. The discussants included Dmitry Afanasiev, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education; Vladimir Mau, Rector of RANEPA; and Yaroslav Kuzminov, Rector of HSE University.
‘The Level of Collectivism and the Potential for Mutual Assistance in the University Community Are Very High’
HSE University has found it easier than other universities to adapt to the current situation under the pandemic and transition to online education. On March 25, at a press conference at TASS, Russia’s largest news agency, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov spoke about the transition and shared his predictions about what the near future holds for education development.
‘It Is Difficult Times like These that Bring Us Closer Together’
On March 23, the working group of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education devoted to university education met again to discuss how education should be organized as Russia seeks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In particular, the group discussed tactics involving volunteerism on university campuses, examples from universities abroad, and developing student questionnaires in order to pinpoint the issues that Russian universities have encountered in their transition to distance learning.
‘We Have Serious Opportunities to Increase the Contribution of Sports to Russia's GDP’
On March 5, leaders and professionals of the sports industry met at HSE University for a conference about the football industry, its economic potential, and education. At the conference, Russian Minister of Sports Oleg Matytsin and Alexei Sorokin, general director of the organizing committee for EURO 2020 in St. Petersburg, announced that despite the current coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship will run as scheduled. Stanislav Cherchesov, Head Coach of the Russian National Team, discussed how the team will prepare for the tournament, and HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov gave remarks regarding the economic potential of Russia’s sports industry.
Universal Basic Income: ‘This Is the Golden Dream of Artistic Bohemians’
The book ‘Exploring Universal Basic Income. A Guide to Navigating Concepts, Evidence, and Practices’ was presented at an HSE University event, which was organized by the HSE Institute of Social Policy. During the event, participants noted the foundational nature of the publication prepared by the World Bank experts and held an emotional debate on the prospects of introducing a universal basic income.
HSE Experts Discuss Human Capital at World Bank Office in Moscow
On January 29 HSE experts participated in a seminar on ‘Skills and Returns on Education in the Russian Federation’ at the World Bank office in Moscow. The seminar was held as part of the analytical support programme for Russia’s national priority project ‘Education’.
