Second Season of ‘Parajanov—100’ Contest Launched at HSE Art and Design School
As part of a continuing exploration of the national cultural context, the HSE University Art and Design School and the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, in collaboration with the Sergei Parajanov Museum and the Artists' Union of Armenia, have announced the second open international online contest for collage in animation dedicated to the centenary of Sergei Parajanov’s birth.
Sergei Parajanov (1924–1990) was an outstanding film director, screenwriter, and artist whose filmography includes Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965), The Colour of Pomegranates (1968), Ashik Kerib (1988), and more.
Sergei Parajanov left an impressive artistic legacy of drawings, collages, assemblages, installations, mosaics, and other works. Many of them have been donated and are kept in the Memorial House in Yerevan, while others are in private collections. The PARADJANOV—100 open contest in the ‘Collage in Animation’ category has been launched in memory of Sergei Parajanov and in honour of the centenary of his birth.
The contest accepts works made in the animation collage technique. Artists, designers, animators, motion and digital artists are welcome to apply. The only requirement is that the work must use animation collage and/or assemblage techniques. Collages should be inspired by the work of Parajanov.
Anyone can submit their project to the contest on hsedesign.ru. Participants can submit as many projects as they like. The winners’ works will be exhibited in Yerevan at the Sergei Parajanov Museum, the Artists' Union of Armenia, and in the urban environment in June 2024. In addition, the winners will receive cash prizes.
Collage is a fine art and graphic design technique used throughout the twentieth century by influential artists such as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky, and many other artists of the classical avant-garde. Sergei Parajanov actively used collage and assemblage in many of his artistic works. In the 21st century, collage remains one of the most significant techniques in fine art and design.
Igor Gurovich, designer, artist, and Academic Supervisor of the Bachelor's in Communication Design at the HSE University Art and Design School in Yerevan:
‘The theme of the Parajanov 2024 Festival is collage in animation. Like last year, the organisers and jury are looking forward to seeing experimental works that follow the rebellious spirit of the artist rather than using formal solutions. Parajanov is a great storyteller. Each of his easel works and films tell us touching and amazing stories. We really hope that the 120-second time limit will not prevent the creators from making a real, complete, profound statement. We will be glad to see stories, both funny and sad. We will also be glad to see technological experiments in the fields of graphics, editing, and sound. We urge you to perceive the collage as the widest possible coverage of plastic arts. With you, we would like to create an idea of the 21st-century collage, to create an image of a still young and still relevant method.’
