Young Researchers from HSE Receive Awards from the Moscow Government
Vladimir Podolskii, Head of HSE’s Big Data and Information Retrieval School, and Elena Vakulenko, Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Economics, have both received awards for research in mathematics and labour studies, respectively.
The Moscow Government holds an annual competition for young scholars involved in fundamental and applied research in various fields.
For 2018, a total of 50 scholars and research teams were announced as winners, including several HSE staff members.
Vladimir Podolskii, who is also Senior Researcher at Steklov Mathematical Institute, was awarded for his studies of algorithmic problems in algebraic and logical structures.
Elena Vakulenko, who is also Senior Research Fellow at the Laboratory for Macro-Structural Modeling of the Russian Economy, was awarded ‘for her substantial contributions to research in migration processes and labour market issues in Russia’.
This award was also presented to several young scholars engaged in research activities at HSE laboratories: Anton KiryanovArtem KrasilovAlexander KrotovKharkevich Institute for Information Transmission ProblemsSkolkovo Institute of Science and TechnologyInternational Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics) for a series of studies in algebra.

The Contribution to Science and Education Award, established by the HSE, recognises outstanding contributions to academic development and international academic cooperation.
Maarten Janssen Named Honorary Professor of HSE
For nearly a quarter of century, Maarten Janssen, a well-known expert in microeconomics and currently a professor at the University of Vienna, has been working with HSE. A ceremony awarding him the honorary title took place at a meeting of the HSE Academic Council.

Books by HSE Lecturer and Graduates Get Awards
On November 16, the winners of the Prosvetitel (‘enlightener’) award for best popular science books in Russian were announced. 'Constructing languages: from Esperanto to Dothraki' by Alexander Piperski, Senior Lecturer at the School of Philology, won in the Humanities category. The winner in the Natural Sciences category is 'That’s crazy! A guidebook of psychological disorders for a big city resident', a book by HSE graduates Daria Varlamova and Anton Zainiev.
