HSE Faculty of Computer Science Holds Second Winter School on Software Engineering

This year, 625 applications from 90 cities were submitted to participate in the second Winter School on Software Engineering at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. The main topics were software architecture, mobile development, digital twins, artificial intelligence, cloud services development, API, technical debt, QA, software systems, Flutter, and distributed systems.

One day of the school was devoted to video game development, during which a round table on training in game dev was held. Specialists from HSE University, 1C, IThub games, Otkritie Bank, MIPT, MSU, Tinkoff, Yandex Pro, Narratoriki, red_mad_robot, and KODE were among the school’s speakers.

'The school and especially the game dev programme turned out to be intense and diverse. I believe that we managed to reveal the dynamism and the high interdisciplinarity of the game development industry. There were no boundaries between speakers and listeners, despite the online format: the discussions turned out to be lively, the participants were eager for more. I hope that we will keep up this activity.'

'This winter school is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the tools and methods that companies use in real development. Many things you learn only by practice; you can’t find answers in books. It's great that students can get this knowledge while studying.

For me, as a speaker, participation in the school is a chance to listen to reports from colleagues and improve my public speaking skills. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge with the participants and contribute to industry development.

My report was devoted to software engineering. It’s important for developers to understand this in order to make a high-quality product.

Software engineering is interesting because it concerns all aspects of work: we can’t speak of any high-quality product without convenient development tools, managing all stages of the product lifecycle and process automation.'

I liked the online format and the variety of topics: even if you already work as a specialist in CS, you’ll definitely find a report that’s useful to you. Topics about AI and the gaming industry are relevant to many participants. I don’t work in these areas, but it was interesting for me to listen to the speakers and their opinions.'

'I liked the lectures by the School of Software Engineering. There were several topics that interested me and, hopefully, encouraged me for my future studies. I learned complex information that can be useful in different situations.'

'There was plenty of useful and interesting information. However, due to time constraints, the lecturers did not share all the information they wanted. Due to my zero knowledge in software engineering, some topics were incomprehensible. But now I have options for obtaining knowledge on these topics.

I really liked the game dev day and, in particular, the round table. I have a lot of good memories of it. The lecture “The Conceptual and Ontological Status of Virtual Reality” by Alexander Segal was so interesting that I can't even put it into words. For the first time in a philosophical lecture, I was completely immersed in the process without being distracted by anything.'
