Students from over 20 Countries Begin Courses in HSE Online Master’s Programme
Classes in the Master of Data Science programme have recently begun. This is the first Master’s programme in Russia taught entirely online on Coursera global educational platform. All classes are conducted in English.
96 students have enrolled in the programme upon successfully passing the online qualifying exam in mathematics.
The new class comprises 62 students from Russia, 4 from Kazakhstan, 4 from India, 4 from China, 2 from Azerbaijan, 2 from Canada, 2 from the USA, 2 from Hong Kong, 2 from Japan, 1 from Germany, 1 from Mexico, 1 from the United Arab Emirates, 1 from Belarus, 1 from Indonesia, 1 from Colombia, 1 from Singapore, 1 from Uzbekistan, 1 from Ecuador, 1 from Tajikistan, 1 from France, and 1 from South Africa. The newly enrolled students range in age from 21 to 54.
Classes in the online master’s programme began on February 17. Students can complete the programme coursework from anywhere in the world while enjoying a flexible schedule and lower than average tuition costs. Students communicate with instructors in real time in chat rooms, video conferences, webinars, and online discussion forums. This real-time communication constitutes the main difference between HSE’s online master’s programme and a typical massive open online course (MOOC), where students study independently with minimal instructor contact.
The Master of Data Science Programme prepares students to pursue careers in modern data analysis, machine learning development, and data science research. The curriculum combines both theory and practice as students apply their newly acquired skills in real projects in the industry. The programme’s industry partner is the Russian multi-national tech company, Yandex.
‘The launch of an English-language online master's programme has become an interesting new experience for us. It was difficult to predict how it would go, simply because no one had done it before,’ says Vladimir Podolskii, programme academic supervisor. ‘It's nice to see that there is a demand for this type of programme among a wide range of applicants. We received a large number of applications, and, as a result, we have a very strong first class.’
HSE News Service spoke with students of the online English-taught master’s programme about why they chose to study in the programme.

Data Science and Business Analytics Students Score the Highest on University of London Exams
Four students of the HSE University and University of London Double Degree Programme in Data Science and Business Analytics received the highest scores on London exams at the end of 2019/2020 academic year. Yunying Pei, Vasily Kireenko, Vladimir Zobov, and Ilya Zisman performed brilliantly in the statistics, business, and management tests.
‘Success of Data Science Professionals Depends on Training’
Jingtao Xu, a second-year student from China, is pursuing his Bachelor’s in Data Science and Business Analytics, a double degree programme between HSE University and the University of London. Yandex and HSE University Open Joint Laboratory
The new laboratory will be part of the Faculty of Computer Science. The laboratory will focus on training professional researchers and conducting research in the field of data science.

Md Tahsir Ahmed Munna is a second-year master’s student in Data Science at HSE. He is also one of the international students nominated for HSE’s Silver Nestling Award in 2019. Munna’s master’s thesis focuses on knowledge graph-based recommender systems, and he works as a research assistant at HSE’s Laboratory for Models and Methods of Computational Pragmatics.
