HSE Students Come in Second at ICC Moot Court Competition
On May 19th, 2017, students of the HSE Faculty of Law took second place in the final round of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition which took place in The Hague. One of the HSE students won the award for best speaker in the finals.
The Faculty of Law was represented by Anastiasia Zakharova, Zhargal Budaev, and Julia Balandina, first-year students of the master’s programme in International Trade, Finance, and Economic Integration Law, as well as Lilya Belfer, third-year undergraduate student of law. The team coach was Dimitry Mednikov, first-year master’s student of International Trade, Finance, and Economic Integration Law.
Each team had to express their position on three issues on the appellation chamber, namely: can a government that came to power as a result of a military coup, recognize the ICC jurisdiction; is genocide towards ‘third-gender’ individuals possible; can an ex-child soldier person be exempted from criminal liability. The arguments were assessed by a judicial board consisting of Geoffrey A. Henderson, and ICC judge, as well as Hirad Abtahi and William St-Michel, ICC administration officials.
The HSE Faculty of Law students took second place in the final round of the Moot Court Competition. Anastasia Zakharova was acknowledged as the best speaker of the finals.
On April 20th and 21st, 2017, the Russian stage of the competition took place at HSE. Thirteen teams took part in it and represented the arguments of each of the parties to a case: advocate, prosecutor, and representative of the affected party. After the two days of the competition, the three best teams made it through to the finals in The Hague.
The HSE team came in third in the Russian stage, and was also given the award for the best memorandums for the prosecuting party and the affected party. The team members also took first (Lilya Belfer) and second (Zhargal Budaev) places as the best speakers at the Moot Court.

In Mexico, a pilot project applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms enabled the Tax Administration Service to detect 1200 tax-evading companies and 3500 fraudulent transactions within three months – a task that would have taken 18 months using conventional methods. Despite some obvious benefits, the use of AI-based solutions to counter corruption also entails several challenges, according to experts of the HSE Laboratory for Anti-Corruption Policy (LAP) and the HSE Faculty of Law who have examined the relevant experience of several countries. A report based on the study’s* findings was presented at the XXIII Yasin (April) International Academic Conference hosted by the Higher School of Economics.

HSE University Ranks Third Among Russian Law Schools for Graduates’ Salaries
HSE University has risen from fourth to third place in the Superjob University Ranking in terms of the salaries made by young professionals in the legal field who graduated in 2014–2019. According to the ranking’s authors, our graduates can expect to earn an average of 100,000 rubles a month in Moscow.
University of London and HSE University Offer a Second Degree Programme in Law
Students who have been accepted to the HSE bachelor’s programmes in ‘Law’ and ‘Private Law’ may simultaneously enroll in the second degree programme at the University of London to supplement their basic training. The second degree programme is also open to external students and working professionals.
Faculty of Law to Launch New Programmes with University of London
This year, the HSE Faculty of Law is launching new extended programmes in Common Law, for which graduates will receive a degree from the University of London. These programmes are open for first-year students, as well as for other students and professionals.

Faculty of Law Team Takes Part in Price Media Law Moot Court
More than half a year of hard work on written memorandums, and then exercising oral arguments and an exhibition game with Queen Mary University of London led to a long-awaited result: the HSE Faculty of Law team was invited for the first time to participate in the international round of the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition. The team represented Russia in the competition, which was held at the University of Oxford from April 9 to 13. This year’s event was dedicated to user content regulation by social media and their liability, illegal distribution of personal photos and fake news, as well as discriminating speech.
HSE Students Win Vis Moot
On March 29th, an HSE Faculty of Law team was the first in Russian history to win the The Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot). It beat the University of Cambridge in the finals, and was the best among 362 university teams from around the globe.
