Yandex and the Higher School of Economics Are Opening a Faculty of Computer Science
The Higher School of Economics and Yandex are opening a Faculty of Computer Science to train specialists in Theoretical and Applied Computer Science and Software Engineering. Former director of Yandex' educational programmes, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Ivan Arzhantsev will be the dean of the new Faculty.
'Computer science is developing at such a pace that classical education simply cannot keep up with it,' says Yandex CEO Arkady Volozh. 'Meanwhile, there is a huge demand for computer science expertise. Together with the Higher School of Economics, we are setting up a faculty at the HSE that will allow people to obtain a full degree in this field. We are confident that they will be in demand both in academia and in the IT industry'.
'Setting up a Faculty of Computer Science was an natural next step in the development of our university, and Yandex's proposal has simply brought forward its creation,' says HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov. 'Even today, the HSE ranks fourth among research institutions and universities in terms of the number of publications relating to Information Technology. We hope that together with Yandex, we will attract the best teachers and researchers from leading Russian and international IT companies.'
The new Faculty will incorporate the HSE's existing School of Software Engineering and School of Applied Mathematics and Information Science, whilst adding a new department of Big Data and Information Retrieval, based on the Joint Department with Yandex which has been operating at the HSE since 2008. The new Faculty's curriculum will be developed jointly by HSE professors and experts from Yandex and will include courses on machine learning, computer vision, Big Data, and other areas of computer science. The HSE teachers, Yandex staff, and teachers of the Yandex School of Data Analysis will all deliver lectures and seminars.
The faculty will offer Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate courses, starting in September. In 2014, there will be 180 places for students on state scholarships, as well as fee-based places. Priority for enrolment will take into account the applicants' USE grades in mathematics, computer science, and Russian language, and the results of olympiads in mathematics and computer science.
Yandex Education offers training courses and fellowships for novice software developers, managers, and other IT professionals. In 2007, Yandex opened its School of Data Analysis to offer further training in Data Analysis and Computer Science. Yandex also offers Masters' courses at MIPT and the St. Petersburg State University, and opened a Junior School of Data Analysis in 2013 for general school students interested in mathematics and computer science.
