On September 19, the 25th Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP) opened in Pingyao, Shanxi Province, China. The exhibition features the works of 16 students of the Faculty of Creative Industries at the HSE Art and Design School, selected following the results of the HSE Creative Open / Photoproject international competition, which received more than 300 entries.

The participants were selected by curators from the HSE Art Gallery, teachers from the HSE Art and Design School, and professors from leading Chinese universities. The exhibition comprises student projects that were highly assessed by the jury. The organisers note that the exhibition aroused great interest among guests of the festival due to the quality and holistic concept of the works.

Natalia Logutova, Deputy Director of the Institute for Creative Industries Development, Irina Chmyreva, lecturer and curator, and Alisa Lapshina, Head of the HSE Photolab, represented HSE University at the opening ceremony. Alisa Lapshina previously participated in the festival as a student and now represents the university as a curator and expert. With the support of Chinese colleagues, the HSE team organised the Capturing Pingyao: PIP25 Photo Contest. The jury included representatives of the HSE Art and Design School, the Institute for Creative Industries Development, as well as international experts—Prof. Yajing Liu of the Communication University of Zhejiang and Prof. Hui Zhang of Xi'an University of Technology.

As part of the festival programme, HSE University representatives showcased the academic programmes of the HSE Art and Design School and the Institute for Creative Industries Development, digital platforms for student support (DAFES, Deziiign, Creative City), and successful graduate cases. Special attention was paid to practice-oriented education and international student promotion. The representatives also highlighted projects concerned with cultural heritage and local identity. Participation in the festival enables students to diversify their international portfolio with projects that could later be displayed in professional environments both in Russia and abroad. For the HSE Art and Design School, the event was an important stage in the development of international cooperation and the strengthening of ties with leading Chinese academic and cultural institutions.

This autumn the HSE Art and Design School and the Institute for Creative Industries Development will hold the joint Russian–Chinese exhibition of contemporary photography ‘China–Russia: Cultural Codes.’ Photography students and experts from both countries will take part in the project. Russian and Chinese curators will select the works for the exhibition, and the programme will feature lectures, master classes, and portfolio reviews.
