‘Mumiy Troll’ Band Launches Video Created by Student of HSE Art and Design School
An animated video for the song ‘Time for Resentment’ by Mumiy Troll has been posted on the band’s official website. Athena Zhurba, 3rd-year ‘Animation and Illustration’ student and author of the concept, directed this video.
‘Time for Resentment’ is a track from the band’s new album ‘After Evil’. Athena Zhurba chose this particular track for her work because the song perfectly corresponded to her mood. She says that the process of making this video was a very positive experience. ‘I gave myself complete freedom: I worked with abstraction, but at the same time, I also used the lyrics,’ says the student. ‘It was interesting to choose a technique that resembles screenprinting. This approach initially seemed a compromise, because I usually work more with black-and-white images.’
Due to its metaphorical nature and lightness of touch, Mumiy Troll’s music can easily tie in with animation, and that’s why Athena chose this band.
Last winter, the HSE Art and Design School invited bands to work with students of the Animation and Illustration bachelor’s programme to create animated videos for their tracks. As a result, about 1000 applications were submitted by musicians. During two modules, students worked on briefs together with some of these clients. In particular, Anna Liubimtseva created a video for the song ‘Short Novel’ by the rock band Buerak, and Evgenia Sheinina directed an animated video for the indie folk band Juna.
In the video for the song ‘Time for Resentment’ Athena created a picture that conveys pain and resentment before resulting in forgiveness. ‘I would like to thank my mentor Leonid Shmelkov, who helped me throughout the project and made the whole process much more fun and enjoyable. I think this positive attitude is necessary when producing a video’ says the student.
Leonid Shmelkov, curator of the Animation and Illustration programme at the HSE Art and Design School, in turn, notes that Athena created a sophisticated piece of work: ‘I was very glad that Athena didn’t hesitate to choose a song she liked. It turned out to be a very good, stylish video. She is clearly a very talented artist.’
The leader of ‘Mumiy Troll’, Ilya Lagutenko says that he is glad that they are continuing to create animated videos: ‘We have made videos in cooperation with both Russian and Asian animators, famous photographers and cameramen, and even shot live videos at concerts. This new video, created and drawn by Athena, is particularly interesting because it is not strictly narrative, and doesn’t always follow the lyrics of the song, but is very imaginative, filled with metaphors and even references to art history. I wonder if you can see what I saw in it?’
